Accessibility features on cell phones
If you feel shy or hesitant about using your iPhone or Android device, especially when it comes to accessibility features, you’re not alone. Many people feel overwhelmed by new technology at first. The good news is that these devices are designed to be as user-friendly as possible, and their accessibility features can open up a world of independence and convenience—one small step at a time.
Start Small, Grow Your Confidence
Apple and Android both offer on the phone personalized services to walk you through setting up your phone for accessibility and learning how to use each feature step by step with really kind coaching, don’t hesitate to call them. It is much easier then trying to do it yourself.

The best way to get comfortable with your phone is to pick just one simple task or feature to focus on. Try it out, repeat it over several days, and let yourself get used to it before moving on to something new. This approach helps you build confidence without feeling overwhelmed. Remember, every expert was once a beginner, and every new skill starts with a single step.
The first thing I did was learn how to use my voice to send text messages, I cannot type on my phone and this is easy and hands free.
The second thing was learned how to make a call using my voice.
Then I learned how to answer a call with the 2 finger tap.
Lastly I learned how to hear what icons are on the screen since I cannot see them.
Now I use ear buds and everything goes straight to my ears without everyone else hearing what is going on and I use my phone hands free for so many things.
It is easy, you will see, just practice one thing at a time for days until you are used to it and then move on.
Happy phone days.
Simple Daily Tasks Made Easier
Here are five everyday things you can do with your smartphone that might be much more difficult—or even impossible—without it. Each task is simple to learn, and you can take your time mastering each one:
Making a Phone Call with Voice Commands
Both iPhones and Android devices let you call friends or family just by speaking as long as their phone numbers are added in your contact list or you say the number out loud to the phone. For example, say “Hey Siri, call John”or say hey seri, call 546….. on an iPhone, or “Hey Google, call Mom” on an Android. This is especially helpful if typing or navigating menus feels challenging 89
Using the Magnifier or Zoom Feature
If you have trouble seeing small print, your phone can act as a magnifying glass. On iPhone, turn on the Magnifier in Settings > Accessibility. On Android, look for the magnification or zoom feature in the accessibility settings. Just open the app and point your camera at what you want to see—no need to squint or struggle with tiny text 279
Sending a Text Message by Voice
You don’t need to type to send a message. Activate voice control (Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control on iPhone, or similar on Android), then say, “Send a text to Jane: I’ll be there soon.” Your phone will type and send the message for you. 89
Getting Directions with Audio Guidance
If you need help getting around, apps like Apple Maps or Google Maps can guide you step by step. These apps work with screen readers like VoiceOver (iPhone) or TalkBack (Android) to provide spoken directions, so you always know where you are and where to go 123
Reading Out Loud What’s on the Screen
If reading small print on your phone screen is a challenge, enable a screen reader. On iPhone, it’s called VoiceOver; on Android, it’s TalkBack. These features will read out loud whatever is on your screen, from texts to emails to web pages. You can turn them on in the Accessibility section of your settings 2379
